Horticultural Therapy
'Therapeutic horticulture is the process by which individuals may develop well-being using plants and horticulture. This is achieved through active or passive involvement.’
Journal of Social & Therapeutic Horticulture, 1999.
Horticultural or Eco Therapy is just that, improving mental well being through gardening and the cultivation of plants. It's not complicated and is practiced throughout the world. My Time has been a passionate advocate of the therapy since it began working with Refugees and Asylum seekers in 2006/07 in a Horticultural project at our counselling centre.
We have worked ever since with a range of different people helping them overcome various issues such as depression, low-self-esteem and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Although little researched, the therapeutic effects of gardening have long been talked about and practiced. There are various Horticultural projects operating throughout Great Britain, from groups specialising in helping War Veterans to those supporting people overcome alcohol and drug abuse.
